Pixel Lounge Offers a Comfy Atmosphere in the heart of Collegetown
Located in an unsuspecting alley between a barbershop and a Subway in the heart of Collegetown, Pixel is a laid-back, no pretense, fun-loving lounge. Featuring DJs nearly every night of the week, Pixel is the perfect spot to unwind and sample some top-shelf liquor or one of their 24 varieties of microbrewed beer constantly in rotation. Owner Jim Frenette says, “We like comfy and we don't believe you should have to change your clothes just to get a tasty martini”.
The lounge’s décor is simple yet striking, with a nice variety of color and mood lighting resulting in the feeling of one of those “warehouse-turned-dance clubs” common in Brooklyn or Philly. They also offer a full arcade of old-school games like Ms. PacMan and Street Fighter and there’s always a constant stream of movies on projection. So, the next time you’re looking to do something different in Ithaca, check out Pixel in Collegetown!

Bishop’s Carpet One Joins The Chamber
Since 1985, Carpet One Floor and Home has earned a reputation as “the ONE store for your perfect floor” by bringing all the right elements together in one place to make shopping for flooring easier than you ever thought possible. Located at 430 West State Street in downtown Ithaca, Bishops was started as a paint store in 1924. Stan Goldberg took over the store when his father passed away around 1960. David Pirko, the current owner, worked for Stan since graduating from Ithaca College in 1969. They have been in business under David’s ownership since August of 2003.
Bishops Carpet One carries all types of flooring products including carpet, vinyl, laminate, wood and ceramic. They also carry all types of Window Coverings from Hunter Douglas, Levolor, and Kirsh. All Carpet One Stores nationally recently added Floor and Home to their names to more accurately define the products they carry… far more than just carpet. Bishops Carpet One is also a leader in “Green” Flooring, having secured the flooring contract for a LEED Certified building – Gateway Commons. Carpet One nationally is taking a leadership position in defining what “green” flooring really is. In the Ithaca store Marmoleum is extremely popular along with Cork and Bamboo flooring. Marmoleum is a true linoleum which is made from all natural, and rapidly renewable resources. As the industry’s largest floor covering retailer, Carpet One stands by you with the buying power of 1,000 stores. This allows them to offer exclusive flooring brands that are renowned for fashion and durability at the most competitive prices.

Customers who enjoyed a serving of Gumbo and Cornbread at the Ithaca Bakery during the stores’ February Gulf Coast theme month will be pleased to know that they helped make a nice donation to Ithaca-based Love Knows No Bounds (LKNB). Struck like so many Americans by the devastation Hurricane Katrina wrought in the Gulf region in 2005, the Bakery offered to donate 50 cents to LKNB from every sale of Gumbo in February at its Meadow St. and Triphammer Mall locations.
On Wednesday, March 19th representatives Karen Ruston and Mike Ellis of LKNB were present at the Ithaca Bakery store on Meadow Street to receive the Bakery’s $600 donation. “We’re happy that this effort worked out,” said Ramsey Brous, co-owner, “and thanks to our faithful customers, we’re gratified to be able to donate a substantial amount to Love Knows No Bounds for their ongoing work on rebuilding the 7th Ward of New Orleans.”

New Brewpub Now Open in Ithaca
One of the questions we often hear at The Chamber is “Why doesn’t Ithaca have a brewpub?” The wait is finally over as Ithaca now has a unique Micro Beer Company located in Bishop’s Small Mall on Cinema Drive, behind the Triphammer Mall and the new Homewood Suites. Owner Stephen Fazzary opened Northeast Pizza a couple years ago (in the space formerly occupied by Rogan’s Northeast) with the intention of opening a brewpub as well. After many months of renovations, The Scale House Brewery and Pub is now offering customers freshly brewed beer straight from the barrel!
The brewery is currently offering 3 types of craft-brewed beer; a pilsner, a red ale, and a dark bock perfect for the winter. Sampler flights are available with this trio plus a fourth small glass, a "black & tan" mixture of the pilsner and bock. Since the space is connected to Northeast Pizza, diners can enjoy tasty Italian fare while sipping their frosty beverages. Live acoustic music is also on the horizon and Fazzary expects to expand the menu in the coming months as well. Stop in soon and surround yourself with good people, a warm and friendly atmosphere and great tasting beer.

European-style Coffee House, Brötchen, Celebrates Grand Opening
For decades, brötchen (pronounced "BRERT-khen") have been served in the finest coffee shops and coffee houses in Austria, Germany and other northern European cities. For Michael Horzing, the owner of Ithaca’s newest coffee shop Brötchen, cooking is the ultimate expression of life. If you ask him, food is not only sustenance, but the meals we cook and the desserts we eat all contain history, art, culture, mathematics, science and, yes, even love. As a young child growing up with his grandparents in Austria, Michael’s idea of good food and the love of home were always intertwined. Michael began his formal training in Vienna, Austria and continued in Rome, Italy where the love of great food is no less essential to life. There, Michael apprenticed in Alfredo Di Roma becoming fluent in the Italian language and cuisine.
When he opened Brötchen this past November, Michael Horzing was delighted to be welcomed by a large international community. Many people have said that this European-style coffee house serving delicious coffees, baked goods, and daily lunch specials has filled a niche on The Commons. Horzing states, “After so many years away from Europe and away from the restaurant business, opening a coffee house inspired by the Viennese Kaffeehaus was, in a way, like coming home again. And, the work involved in owning and operating a coffee house that serves authentic Austrian and German food and European baked goods is a labor of love.”

Thayer Appliance Celebrates 80 Years
In 1927 Paul Thayer started his own business in his West Seneca Street home selling radios. He named the business Thayer Radio Company. The radios were on consignment to Paul from Treman King & Company, a local department store. Paul’s primary income, however, was as a print shop teacher at Ithaca High School (now the DeWitt Mall). Soon the radio sales exceeded the capacity of his house and he built a one room store attached to his house. Paul then decided to go full time in the business and he gave up his teaching job. Later that room was expanded with a second display room and a repair shop in the rear, nearly filling up the play yard enjoyed by his three sons, Rog, Bill and Larry. By 1940, Paul was selling refrigerators (“See Thayer for Frigidaire”), kitchen stoves and washing machines in addition to radios and small appliances, thus the name change to Thayer Appliance Company.
Just before WW II Paul bought the property at 417-419 West Seneca Street and tore down an old tin shop. Larry took over the business in the late 50’s and built several additions to the original building. He expanded the business with television being a big item at that time. Upon Larry’s semi-retirement in 1995, his son Doug took over as the third generation owner/operator and continues the fine reputation of the Thayer businessmen in Ithaca. Doug has won many awards as did his father, Larry and grandfather, Paul, usually in the form of vacation trips for outstanding sales. The Thayer employees are treated as family and have very little turnover, with some working for the company over 30 years. Taking good care of their customers over the years, selling great products at fair prices and the knowledgeable staff has earned an area wide excellent reputation and attest to the good name the Thayer’s have always had in Ithaca.

Catchmakers Launches Personal & Confidential Matchmaking Service for CNY Professionals
Catchmakers, Inc. offers a much needed alternative to internet dating. With strict focus on confidentiality, efficiency and personal service, owners Carole Schiffman and Meredith MacLeod have created a service that provides the opportunity for successful, Central New York men and women to build long-term relationships. This old style of connecting people is a refreshing alternative to internet dating. With an abundance of small cities and college towns, Central New York is brimming with single professionals -- academics, artists and business people. Catchmakers is the first personal matchmaking service to actively match people across these close but disconnected community lines.
As a strictly confidential service, no one other than the matchmakers views your file. Carole and Meredith find appropriate matches and provide clients with honest information about potential dates. Other types of services leave it to members to take on the daunting and time-consuming task of wading through personal profiles, which is inefficient and compromises confidentiality. Catchmakers is open to all who are single, divorced or widowed; heterosexual, lesbian or gay, and over the age of 25. Catchmakers’ service is specifically designed for those seeking long-term commitments.

Moore’s Tree Farm Celebrates 20 Years
To celebrate Moore’s Tree Farm's 20th Anniversary, Richard and Kay Moore recently presented a check for $1,000 to the Ithaca YMCA's CEO Paul Grennell. The check kicks off the couple's plan to collect donations during the Christmas season to help area youth participate in YMCA programs throughout the year. The YMCA isn't the Moores' only charitable project. Richard is also Vice President of the National Christmas Tree Association, a group that sends trees to active troops stationed at 20 bases nationwide.
Located at 575 Auburn Rd., (Route 34) in Lansing, The Moores started their business 20 years ago as a retirement business after Richard finished a career teaching technology at Cornell's Hotel School. But the business grew into a second career for the couple as the farm grew to hold the 65,000 trees that are there today. The trees are available for customers to cut themselves, or pre-cut for Christmas and landscaping. During the Christmas tree season the farm has many events including visits from Santa, horseback riding, and this year Mulch Mountain, a hill for kids to climb on that is made from recycled pieces of trees.
